Patients suffering from chronic back pain are desperate for lasting and permanent cure for their ordeal. Unfortunately some sufferers have to deal with their back pains their entire lifetime. Most of them have already tried different methods of treatments, both conventional and alternative, but have been frustrated with the results.
Knowing that they have to deal with their pains for extended period or even a lifetime, they need to manage their pain as part of their lifestyle. Overtime, if not properly managed, these patients may lead to permanent total disability for some patients.
Patients in pain for back injury should be very cautious with their movements. Sudden and abrupt movements should be avoided to prevent the pain from worsening. Back bending and lifting heavy objects should not be part of the patient’s activities for these puts pressure on the affected area causing severe pain and greater damage.
Posture should always be taken into consideration. When standing, both feet must carry the weight of the entire body and should not rest on one foot only. Good posture must be maintained while walking, making sure that balance is achieved to avoid stress on the back and to provide good circulation of the blood to the affected area. When sitting, always use a chair with back support but do not slouch. Use comfortable mattress when lying down and should always find the most comfortable position.
Although movements should be limited, people with chronic back pain should not stay in one position for an extended period of time. The body must be able to shift pressures from time to time to prevent numbness and poor blood circulation. Some form of exercises may also be performed such as light stretching to develop muscle and bone mass around the affected area for proper support.
Sufferers of this type of back pain should also maintain a healthy lifestyle by staying away from smoking or drinking. Intake of these harmful substances weakens the immune system and robs the body of vital nutrients necessary for building healthy cells. Diet should also be regulated to make sure that the body is supplied with the needed vitamins and minerals in order for the patient to carry on with the ordeal and hopefully recover fully.
Patients should also see to it that they follow routines advised by health professionals. Any bodily change that the body undergoes should be consulted with an expert to determine its influence to the back pain. It is also very important to avoid all negative feelings such as self-pity, anxiety, hopelessness, and depression. These feelings only make the suffering even worse.
Stress management is also very important for people with prolonged back pain. Having movements restricted and being unable to function the way they used to is very frustrating for most people with back injury. Not to mention the cost of dealing with chronic back pain which include regular visits to health care professionals, maintenance drugs, lost income opportunity, and the possible increased cost of living due to changed lifestyle.
