Causes, Symptoms And Treatment Of Neck Pain

A neck pain or a shoulder pain is very discomforting and very common. It is not a medical condition to worry about unless you are experiencing severe pain. A neck pain is mostly self-inflicted and one can learn a home remedy to do away with the discomfort. Although, you may experience a simple strain or stiffness around the neck, some of the neck pain conditions can be life threatening.

Causes of neck pain

The self-inflicting causes of the back pain include slouching or sleeping with neck twisted. Sometimes you may wake up in the morning with a bad back pain or shoulder and this is mostly caused by bad sleeping positions which strains the neck. The strains results to swelling of the neck and spasm of the neck muscles.

Another cause of neck pain is whiplash injury. This is caused mainly from a car accident while there is sudden acceleration or deceleration causing neck spasm. Falling off from a higher level from the ground like a ladder or a bicycle may inflict injury which can cause a neck pain.

An infection of the neck will cause an inflammation around the neck. Injury of the muscles and soft tissues causes shoulder and neck pains.

Symptoms of neck pain

Your neck pain may be intermittent or chronic (long-lasting pain). You may experience stiffness around the neck and shoulders. The pain is also severe and may spread to other areas such as your arms, upper back and shoulders. You may experience weakness, numbness and a tingling around your neck shoulders and back. The weakness is due to severe muscle pain or bone movement while the numbness is caused by pinched or bruised nerves.

Turning your neck back and forth may also be difficult and uncomfortable. A headache may also result from a neck pain. You may also notice a color change where the bruised area turns blue. This indicates the arteries or the veins may be injured. Redness or rashes around the area shows that there is an infection on the neck resulting to pain.

Treatment of neck pain

Treating a neck pain depends on the type of cause. Many treatments can be done at home if not severe. A diagnosis is first done by a physician in order to determine the cause if not well known. This is important since a serious case is immediately treated to avoid further damage.

If you are experience a simple neck pain from activities, then a home remedy may be a simple solution. A chronic pain is better tended by a doctor who will take X-ray tests and CT scans.

After the diagnosis, then your doctor will prescribe medicine to take in order to ease the neck pain.  Some of the home remedies that you can try to help ease your neck pain include;

  • You can use a heating pad for 15 to 30 minutes every 2- 3 hours. An ice pack placed on the area that there is pain may also help ease the pain.
  • You can take over-the–counter pain relief medicine such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen
  • Exercising your neck and shoulders or physical therapy is also a way to ease your neck pain.
