Pain in Neck and the Ways to Overcome this Problem

The problem of pain in neck is very common among people of all ages from young to older as it may result from injury, accident or dislocating of the muscles etc. The neck pain may occur from awkward sitting or sleeping position such as working in the computer by bending, carrying a heavy bag while walking up the stairs or sleeping in awkwardly sideways positions etc. You may experience the pain in neck which may start as pain in a certain area of your neck, the spreading of the pain through your shoulders and arms, numbness or immobility of your neck muscle, the inability to touch the place etc. All of these symptoms may result from injured nerves, muscle or bone damage, swelling or fracture, infection of the throat, spine problems etc.

The pain in neck may accompany the pain in the shoulder, upper back or the lower back with sharp shooting pain, headache, numbness, swelling, tingling and tenderness etc. You may also suffer from the stiffening or the aching of the muscles in the middle or side of the neck, stiffness making it hard to move your neck, tingling or burning resulting from the nerve injury, headaches with sharp pain etc. Once you start feeling pain in neck you may loose the ability of move your neck out of the range such as tilting your head back or lower it towards your chest etc. Among the serious injuries that may cause pain in neck, there is the whiplash occurring from an accident, muscle strains through the overuse of the muscles of your neck, degenerative disc disease, tearing of the cervical discs and herniated discs etc.

When any of these injuries or pains occur, you have to get proper treatment, for example if you have minor pain then you can take acetaminophen, apply heat pads or ice bags on the place of pain, put your neck on rest, try to stretch your neck slowly few minutes at a time, massage the area of the pain to improve blood flow etc. However, if your home based treatments do not reduce the pain in neck, then you should see the doctor for proper treatments. The doctor who is specialized in the treatment of the neck pain will give you the proper advice, treatment and medicine for the cure of the pain in neck.

In case of serious medical condition, accident or injury, you may have to go through surgeries, but if the pain is not serious then you will be provided non – surgical treatments. In this case, the doctor may advise you to do physical examination, x – rays, MRI scans to detect the cause of the pain in neck. These diagnoses will detect the problems of your nerves, spinal cords, ligaments, muscles or the discs of your neck. Depending on the severity of your pain in neck, you will be provided medications, chiropractic treatment, intensive muscle training, physical therapy, strong painkillers, exercise program and other non – surgical cares. The treatments may vary for short term and long term pain in neck.
